Nathan Detroit (Frank Sinatra) is a small-time gambler who wants to make it big. His girlfriend, Adelaide (Vivian Blaine) wants him to straighten up and marry her. Detroit hears about a bunch of high rollers who are coming to town. The cops are hot on him about his illegal crap games, so he has to find a place to hide his game. He could use a local garage, but the $1000 rent is out of his range. So he hooks up with Sky Masterson (Marlon Brando). Since Masterson will bet on anything, Detroit bets him $1000 that he can’t get a certain doll to go to dinner with him in Cuba. The doll Detroit chooses the straight-laced Sister Sarah (Jean Simmons) from the local mission. He figures he’s a sure winner. However Masterson learns that Sister Sarah’s mission is floundering, so he promises her 12 sinners in return for her dating him, which she does. They fall in love. Although he won the bet, Masterson pretends he didn’t and pays Detroit the $1000. They have the crap game, Masterson fills the mission with sinners, and both Adelaide and Sister Sarah realize that whatever their men are, they love them.
