Set in West Cork, in Ireland during the most turbulent period of modern Irish history, the Wind that Shakes the Barley is a story of siblings united in resistance towards British imperialism, only to later find themselves committed to causes that that see the brothers at war with themselves. Damien (Cillian Murphy), a recent university graduate, is due to leave Cork for London to take up a job as a trainee doctor. A great achievement at the time for a Catholic boy from Cork, his plans change when he witnesses the brutality that the British 'Black and Tans' are bringing to his country. He joins his experienced brother Teddy (Padraic Delaney) in active service with the Irish Republican Army and their pursuit of freedom for Ireland begins, but this dangerous quest will see the brothers fighting not only the British, but each other.
