Lucy Muir (Gene Tierney) is a young widow who moves with her daughter Anna (Natalie Wood) and her maid Martha (Edna Best) to a small seaside cottage. Unfortunately, they quickly find out that the house is haunted by the ghost of the former occupant, a rough-edged sea captain named Daniel Gregg (Rex Harrison). The ghost, however, only appears to Lucy. Lucy slowly runs out of money and to supplement her income, she begins to dictate the memoirs of the ghost. The book is a best-seller and Lucy and her family find stability. As time passes, Lucy meets and falls for a gentleman writer of kids' books named Miles Fairley (George Sanders). The ghost leaves not wishing to become an obstacle to her happiness and ends his friendship with Lucy. But sadly for Lucy, Miles is already married with children and Lucy realizes that her true love was the ghost after all.
