A gritty, flirty, party-girl named Sarah Tobias (Jodie Foster) is brutally raped at a bar one night by three men. Although intoxicated and under the influence of drugs, she is able to identify her assailants to the police. Not wanting to be bothered with a weak case, the district attorney Kathryn Murphy (Kelly McGillis) plea-bargains the case away and Sarah's attackers receive light sentences on account of Sarah's promiscuous past and questionable character. Enraged at this outcome, Sarah convinces the district attorney to continue the fight for justice by prosecuting those in the bar who cheered on the rapists and did not come to Sarah's help. But the prosecutor has her work cut out. In order to get justice for Sarah, can she convince a jury that no matter the circumstances or the past history of Sarah, that the men are guilty? And in the process, can Kathryn's social conscience be re-awakened?
