In 1963, two prisoners break out of jail and are chased by the law across Texas. Robert 'Butch' Haynes (Kevin Costner) and his partner kidnap a boy, Phillip 'Buzz' Perry (T. J. Lowther), along the way. Soon Butch's partner abandons them to escape on his own and Butch is left with Buzz. The two are pursued by Chief Red Garnett (Clint Eastwood) and a specialist in kidnapping of children Sally Gerber (Laura Dern). Because of Red's past in putting Butch away and Sally's experience with children who are kidnapped, they are determined to not get into a stand off with Butch. But trained marksmen and local police who get involved add tension that someone will be hurt carelessly. The story develops around Butch and Buzz as they develop a friendship. Butch wants Buzz to experience the joys of childhood since he is being raised strictly. Buzz is wise beyond his years and is able to draw out the father instinct in Butch and even teach him a thing or two.
