Tomas (Daniel Day-Lewis) is a doctor in Prague, Czechoslovakia. In the spring of 1968, before the Russians invaded, he is enjoying his sexual freedom with Sabina (Lena Olin) and Tereza (Juliette Binoche). While Sabina, a painter, seems to accept the philosophy of uncommitted sensuality, Tereza struggles to share her lover with another woman. When rioting fills the air and their lives are disrupted, it seems that enjoying sensuality is the only thing that makes sense and can take their mind off of the forces of destruction all around them. Their political freedom is being repressed so they look for expression of freedom elsewhere. When Tereza pours her passion into becoming a photographer, the two women meet and find they have more in common than Tomas. As artists they can enjoy the simple pleasures of life in the midst of upheaval. ...
