A young writer named Basil (Alan Bates) inherits a mine in Crete from his Greek ancestors. On his way to check out his inheritance, Basil hires Zorba (Anthony Quinn) to be his cook when he reaches his destination. Zorba convinces Basil to stay with Madame Hortense (Lila Kedrova) who is running a boarding house that seems to Basil like a brothel. After Basil decides to stay in Crete and hires Zorba to work in his mine, he begins to learn the life lessons Zorba has to teach him. With a love of life like Zorba, Basil even considers a romantic interest in the most beautiful widow on the island (Irene Papas).
