Staged in 1940s Los Angeles, two detectives, Bucky Bleichert (Josh Hartnett) and Lee Blanchard (Aaron Eckhart), are enjoying financial and professional success at the police academy. Stumbling upon a decapitated woman along the side of a road, they are faced with the murder mystery, the Black Dahlia. Lee grows highly obsessed with the missing woman, Elizabeth Short (Mia Kirshner), only catching faint glimpses of her in seedy interviews and film footage. His obsession wedges the marriage between himself and lover Kay Lake (Scarlett Johansson). Kay attaches herself to Bucky out of fear and confusion as secrets begin to unfold all around them. Looted monies, prostitution, explicit pornography, drugs, and crime all around, Bucky must find his way through the twisted tale before he too is consumed by it.
